Car Shopping

A_Junglen The last week I haven't played much poker, but have still been very busy.

I've been spending time with my family and doing some relaxing, but have also started working on my taxes and doing other chores. I bought a new Tempurpedic mattress, booked a suite in Niagara, scheduled a consultation for Lasik, and recently decided to buy a car.

Sorry, I'm not buying anything ridiculous - but it'll be nice and reliable. Currently looking at the 2007 Honda Civic Si as well as the 2007 Acura TL. I'm looking to spend around 20-30k for a new car, but again - I don't need a Porsche or anything. Some of my friends have spent over 100k and for a car and I kinda think that's silly and unpractical.

That's pretty much it for now. Thanks for reading

I had Lasik surgery in 1998--one of the best things I ever did. No more worrying about contacts drying out or falling asleep with them on, being able to jump in a pool without stressing about losing one. Shoot, just getting up in the morning and being able to find my way around without banging into something was awesome. You'll love it. And, yes, spending $100k for a car, even if you can afford it, is silly. Figure every dollar you blow today would be worth 8-10x that over the course of your life if you invested it. That $100k car is really "costing" your friends $800k to a million. If they aren't a Formula 1 driver and making money with it, it's stupid.

Hey Edmond,

One of the reasons why I post here is because of the comments. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate hearing about your experience with Lasik.

Let me give you a little more Lasik insight. I'm 9 years into mine and still going strong. I need reading glasses now but I think that's more ago than anything. Five years ago, reading was no problem. My eyes were terrible before the surgery. I needed contacts or glasses for everything and my left eye was borderline whether or not they could correct it. Still, I had several friends who had good luck with the surgery, so I went for it.

There are a number of eye doctors in LA who performed the surgery, obv, and I picked the guy who was considered the top guy in the area. He was more expensive (about $4600 then) but I figured eye surgery wasn't something I was going to use a 2 for 1 coupon on. Anyway, I had a couple of prep sessions, then went in one morning and was out within an hour or so. That night I was at a dinner and by the next morning my eyes were fine. I woke up and for the first time in my life, I could see in the morning. It was awesome.

I had some follow-up visits and minor touch-up work on my left eye, because the doctor thought we could make it perfect. I had to wear sunglasses for a year or so (not constantly but your eyes will initially be a little more light sensitive and I live in LA) but now, I wear them only when needed. When I tell you my eyes were bad, I couldn't tell you from Bond18 at arm's length before. Now I'm 20/20 or better.

I play a lot of tennis and am pretty active. It's great not to wear contacts. I travel a ton. It's great being able to sleep on a plane not worry about my eyes. No saline, no cleaning, not losing or tearing a lens by mistake, no falling asleep by mistake with my contacts in...I'm really happy. I'd have paid $46,000 for the work, if I'd known the real upside.

I have a Tempurpedic mattress and love it. My back had been killing me each morning for years but once I got the mattress it hasn't been an issue since and it's been over a year. I LOVE it.
