Some Thoughts For Us Lower Volume Players

Still no tourneys for me this week though I’ve been reading and thinking plenty about them. I've been continuing to play cash on a daily basis. I've continued to build on what was already a solid week. Last I left off I was ahead slightly more than 3 buy ins for the week.

Thursday + 1 buy in
Friday + 1/3 buy in

With Thursday and Friday in the books I'm ahead 4 ½ buy ins heading into today, the final day of the week.

I’ve been very happy with my game lately. I feel I’m concentrating better and making proper decisions more often than I’m not which is all that I can ask of myself.

The reality for those of us who don’t put in major volume each week is that our short term results are more highly influenced by the fate of the cards as we don’t have the benefit of speeding up the big ‘V’ (variance). This may be one of the most important things for me to keep up front as a poker player. In the past I’ve fallen victim on many occasions when a handful of negative days and bad rivers creep into my head and affect how I play. I believe that this was my recipe for failure thru September and the 1st half of October. The difference between succcess and failure for a lower volume cash game player can be as little as one decision per day which is why it's so important to play 'well' at all times.

Just think about how many times you've made a river call knowing your were very likely beat or you fired that 3rd barrell just knowing that the calling station you're up against can't fold mid pair and your A high just isn't any good. Eliminate 1 bad decision a day and add all of that up over the course of a week and think about how much $ that can amount to over time.

Mid Week Update

Sunday came and it was back to the cash tables. I’ve had a solid start to the week.

Sunday + 2/3 buy in
Monday + 1 ½ buy ins
Tuesday + 1 1/3 buy ins
Wednesday – 1/3 buy in.

I’m ahead about 3 buy ins thus far this week which is nice considering the limited time I actually devote to playing.

I’ve been really itching to play live, something I haven’t done since June when I spent a week or so at Borgata for their Summer Open. If you weren’t aware the Borgata introduced a newly structured $5,000 Main Event at this years’ Summer Open. The structure ranks as one of the best of all time, with slowly moving rounds and blinds scheduled over 4 days with a 50K starting chip stack. It was the first Main Event I ever bought into. Things didn’t go well for me but that’s a story for another day.

Borgata is running their 2nd ever mega stacked $5K Main Event in November. I was hoping to be able to get down there to play in it but sadly my schedule won’t allow the time away. The WPT comes to Borgata in January so perhaps that will be my next chance at some live action. Until then it looks like I’ll be playing online.

To those who inquired about the 6-Max tournament last week it was good for $1100+

Recent Poker History

First of all, thanks to everyone for the warm welcome to TwoRags.com

I’m not yet certain how I’ll be using this blog. For now I want to just briefly recap the last few months of my poker life. As I indicated in my hello post I’m regularly a MTT player, it being my game of choice. Around the 2nd week of August I had a change in my life schedule which impacted my ability to devote time to poker. This happens to me on occasion throughout the year and normally I’ll just take a break from the game until things clear up and I have time to play MTT’s again. In August I decided to do something different. I decided to find some time each day to play but for me this meant having to play cash as time wouldn’t allow for multis.

After dabbling in online full ring cash on rare occasions over the past year or two without meaningful success I decided to switch to 6-max and give it a try. In case anybody cares I’m playing $1/$2 NL. Nobody will be surprised to hear that I began on a total heater. In fact from the outset I had 17 consecutive winning days and was beginning to plan my retirement :-)

My winning streak ended at the very end of August when I had a big losing day followed by a break even day. September started out well with 2 big winning days before the wheels fell off the bus. I began running bad and playing sub optimally at the same time. When Sept was over I had logged more winning days than losing days but was loser for the month. Overall I was still ahead thanks to my insane month of August.

October began rather unspectacularly. I was craving MTT action but would have to settle for cash for a while longer. I fell into an early hole and by the end of the first week I was pretty dejected about cash in general as my total profits were about wiped out. Finally on Sunday October 7th after exactly 2 months away from MTT’s I found some time at 6AM to play a $30 NL event on Stars. I made the final 2 tables and eventually busted 13th when my AA ran into the chip leaders 55 All In Pre Flop.

It was back to cash after that and I honestly felt a little pep in my step again. Amazing what playing in a MTT will do for my psyche. I rattled off 4 winning days before having a losing Friday and Saturday that more than wiped out the prior 4 days profits. It was back to the grind on Sunday morning the 14th where I won a buy in. Monday saw me lose 3 buy in’s while on Tuesday I won one back.

On Wednesday the 17th I bought into an 18 player SNG to satisfy my craving for MTT action and I took 2nd place. Later that day I had a winning cash session for more than half a buy in. I won a buy in on Thursday the 18th and another on Friday the 19th before losing 2 buy in’s on the morning of Saturday the 20th. 2 steps forward followed by 2 steps back, ugh.

I found some rare free time on Saturday night the 20th and decided to give the cash a rest and play the $50 6-max MTT on Stars while catching up on some computer work. It was a good decision. Nearly 4 hours later I received the congratulatory email from Stars for my 2nd place finish. No matter how often I get there, making a deep run still feels great. For me there’s still nothing like it in all of poker, I just crave that fix.

Yesterday I was back to cash and won ~ ¾ of a buy in. I also found time to play the $10 Rebuy at 8AM but busted when my set of Q’s ran into a set of K’s. This summarizes my recent poker history. As the mood strikes I’ll definitely discuss more of my past which includes plenty of live game action both in cash and tournaments.

Hello Everybody - First Post

Hello everybody. I decided to start this blog mainly as a motivational tool for myself. It wasn't difficult to choose TwoRags.com as the place to host my blog. After looking around a bit I noticed that a couple of my teammates from the 2+2 2006 MTTC were blogging here (our Team Capt. BadgerPro & Pechorin). In addition a couple other Team Captains that I played the challenge with and whose games I respect alot are blogging here as well (shaundeeb and A_Junglen). As well there are a number of other 2+2ers who I also have a great deal of respect for that blog here including Adanthar, nath, Bond etc.... If I left your name off it wasn't intentional, I've only been here a couple of days and haven't seen every blog that's hosted here.

So with that said I hope to use this blog as a place to hold myself accountable and to keep me motivated to play well. One of my poker problems has been not treating the game with respect for sustained periods of time and suffering the consequences that come along with it. If I meet some more good people along the way thru blogging I'll consider that a life reward.

Let me start off by saying that I am not a full time player. I currently play online on an almost daily basis when I have an hour or two to myself. Unfortunately I've been relegated to mainly cash games of late due to time limitations. I'm not particularly fond of cash games nor am I very good at them. I hold my own but they've been hardly worthwhile from a monetary standpoint. I play them because I'd rather do that than not play at all.

My poker passion is and has always been multi table tournaments. In truth I've been only a moderately successful player where multi's are concerned but I still really enjoy playing them and I hope to continue improving.

In future posts I'll share some specifics relating my poker background and experiences. In general I've been playing recreationally for much of the last 4 years, both live and online sans anything spectacular happening to me. I can only hope that there are many great times ahead.
