Can a 9-5, late 20s, first generation US immigrant, earning in the 130s from said job ever make his dream of being a pro poker player come true? Or is he destined to be stuck on the rungs of the US corporate ladder.
It is probably -$ev for someone who makes 130's to try and be a pro poker player. By the time you get by the variance and skill level necessary to succeed at that level your time will have been better spent climbing the corporate ladder.
Having said that, if you miserable in your job the only way to go pro it is to play nights/weekends, get better, and build a nice roll so that you have at least a year's living expenses and bankroll. Then take a year off work and give it a shot.
I have a nice job myself but play for the love of the game and to make some nice extra money for vacations and extra things. I think even if I had some huge sick score, keeping my 9-5 would still be +ev.
@brad: what you say is true, but in a way i have found my love/passion in poker (similar to most of us who play with a passion for the game), I would be keeping my job for sure for some time to come, but in 4-5 years time -----> you never know
