I’ve been talking to a number of my friends who are highly successful tournament grinders lately such as Seabeast, Psyduck, and StevoL about the ‘bigger picture’. What we’re trying to accomplish through poker, what we want to do outside of
that, how much money we think we need to accomplish these goals, life style choices, etc. We’ve especially been talking a lot about money management.

The thing that never stops startling me about the poker community, and especially the multi table tournament community, is just how many guys are reckless with their bankroll and general money management. I’m not necessarily a master of either, but ...

Hey Tony,

This post really hits the nail on the head. It is just astounding to me the number of poker players who seriously have 0 BR management, don't care about losing money, huge egos, the list goes on. Not to say I'm a bankroll nit, but there is a point where putting 10k on a live event simply doesn't make good LIFE sense, even if your bankroll is in well in the 100s-200s. Selling action seems not to appeal to many people, and I simply don't get it.

Oh well, I say let them do what they want, pursue the extravagant lifestyles they do. Grinders like you and I are lucky enough to be comfortable enough with the way we play and what we play.

Excellent post. I've been thinking a lot about my own bankroll management lately. I think a lot of people don't want to be considered grinders, but want all the money associated with it. A lot of people have the "just one big win" mentality, which generally leads to their downfall.
