current status first:
So today was a very looooong day of classes at the school of hard knocks. I started off the day with an $8 bankroll and felt like I was going to just plow through the day and end up at $40 or $50 or more, and for the first hour or two I was cruising. I was crushing .01/.02NL (henceforth I will refer to this as .02NL), and I was at about $13 and change.
I then decided to "take a shot" at some $1.10 45 man SnGs and after some early mixed results I was shortly up to a nice $27 or so. I now thought I was primed to start grinding these things non-stop, but as I would soon find out my stomach was way smaller than my eyes. I started to hit a OOTM streak, and then after a bit went to check my account balance and I was at $4.77! I knew that the 45 man SnGs were high variance, but I somehow convinced myself that 20 some buyins would be enough to get going (lol).
So I went back to .02NL, and actually lost 2 buyins (down to less than $3 at this point, yikes!), before rebounding back up to about $8 or so. I took a break for dinner and then came back and played .02NL until I was up to about $11 or $12. I decided to take a shot at just a couple of the 45 mans again, but altering my strategy. I realized that previously I had played my normal turbo SnG strategy, which revolves around playing primarily for 1st place, and while it was probably the most +$EV way to play, the variance associated with it was just to high for my meager bankroll. I knew I could play a style that would minimize variance at the cost of precious EV of course, but still profitable. It seemed to work too, but unfortunately I was still running terribly (seemed like KK just would not win all day), and I ended up back at .02NL.
Then after I was completely beat and ready to call it a day, I decided to gamble it up in a couple of $3.40 STTs. I played 2 and got a 3rd place, then played 2 more and got 1st and 3rd and was up to almost $30, ship it! I was really feeling it and decided to short stack 25NL for the last 10 minutes or so before I called it a night. I quickly pissed away $10 and decided to just stop before I just lost control.
I've always had BR management issues (you can see some of it showing above), and that's one of the bigger reasons why I wanted to try and stick this out for a full month. I'll try and post more about my bankroll woes sometime this month, but for now I've just got to refocus for the weekend. I'm taking most of tomorrow off watching my daughter, but I might fool around in .02NL for a bit. Sat and Sun will be grindfests.
