Day9, 9/29, the ride is over:

OK, so it’s 8:30pm and I want a cigar, except I’d already smoked the only one I brought with me. I talked with Cindy, who was still in the tournament like a good player should be, and guided me towards a small piano bar between Paris and Bally’s where I could buy and smoke ‘em in a nice atmosphere. Sounded like a good plan, but I wanted Cubans to complete that picture and since I knew where to score ‘em, it was only a matter of getting down there. In hindsight, a cab would’ve done the trick a little better, but I pulled the car out of TI and took 15N to 95S, exiting down-town, preparing to use Binions valet. Off the ramp, through the light and right onto Ogden then a left into the valet area. I was asked if I was a hotel guest and of course I said yes adding, “I may not be long as I just have to check-in then head back to the strip for a tournament. [[ This is a content summary only.
Day9, 9/29: continued:

But it’s only one-thirty in the afternoon and it’s my last day in Vegas. I still need to mentally recover from the cooler, so there’s no need to find a game right away. I decide to head back to the apartment for a bit, getting ready to depart for tomorrow and to form up a game-plan. Note to self: once on the strip, STAY ON THE STRIP! 15N was STACKED so I decided to hop off at Sahara and hunt down the “Welcome to Paradise” sign that LVM had mentioned in the Vegas trivia thread. I’m not going to spoil the fun, but it’s not in the exact location mentioned, you’ll have to find it for yourself :). Once found, I took Sahara back to Decatur and it too was ass-packed with cars galore! I don’t what’s up with the traffic but damned if it didn’t take over 90 minutes to get back  By this time, I needed food again, and the traffic was hurting my brain, so I made a top into Pop’s that made the traffic look like light-speed! F’variance, F’the poker gods, F’karma….f’em all Now don’t get me wrong here, I ALWAYS have fun when I visit Vegas, it’d just be nice to run down the odds and little more than the bitch has been crushing me I believe I’m playing good poker, making the right decisions, staying focused, etc but I just need ‘em to fall my way. I’m always open to discussion on the hands, and would love to hear thoughts, good or bad.

I indeed got some much needed good sleep and kicked off the day as any other would to prepare to greet the poker playing world. I parked the rental at my preferred home-base location the TI parking garage, then leisurely strolled over to the Venetian. I stopped by the registration desk inquiring about the number of entrants. I got a very nice “political-esque” reply from Andrew He said, “we expect anywhere from 40-60 players today. [[ This is a content summary only. Is anyone getting sick of this yet? I think I’ve “talked” more to you folks than I have my own wife, but then again, she doesn’t care about the cards or losing!

Thursday’s marathon session of rum runners hit me harder than I’d thought and Friday morning came crashing down on me like a ton of bricks. At 6:30am a most obnoxious headache pulled me from bed, begging to be handled. A swig of coke and a packet of BC Powder did the trick, and I was back down for another couple of hours. I won’t bore you with the leftover breakfast of pizza from Grimaldi’s and a half-eaten cannoli

I got myself woken up, semi-fed, showered, and then headed down to Caesars. About 11:20am the noon tourney had only 16 players registered. I’m sure that’d change but I held off to see the turnout. I went over to the Cypress Street Café for a little something to add to me Italian breakfast! [[ This is a content summary only. Damn, all I can taste is fruit juice from whatever umbrella’d concoction I was throwing down my gullet last nite (hey Mrs Lederer ) and cigar smoke Not that indecisiveness is necessarily bad but it does lead to doing things on the cuff and that’s exactly what happened!

I’ve kinda had in the back of my head that I’d like to take in the show, “Love” and I went into ticket hunting mode. Of course the only seat available last nite was an obstructed view for the 10pm show, not really my idea of fun and since poker was firmly on the schedule for Friday and Saturday, that was now a wash. I finally decided to just head down to the strip and meander from there. I parked at TI and made my way to the Fashion Mall to check out the half-price ticket outlet. Couldn’t really find anything that tickled my fancy, ‘cept for the Fab4 show at PH, but since it was already 5:35pm, there was no way I’d make the show. What to do with myself now?
Day5/6/7, 9/25-27:

Pretty boring couple of days as I actually had to finally do some work

I had to observe a new Instructor over the course of 4 classes, and then provide feedback at the end of the day. Even with light work days, I knew I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, so I don’t and didn’t play. On Tuesday nite after chowing down, I headed over to Caesars to talk with fellow AVP’r EightOuts (Chris). He was sitting in the $1/3 ($500) and took a quick break so we could talk about some hands played. Seems he had a British Maniac at his table but the hands discussed were pretty standard, just tough to adjust and not be run down. I’m looking forward to talking more, and will keep an eye out for the pm!

Wednesday was even more mundane. We did however snag a free lunch out of the regional training director so that was a plus, saved my per diem for later debauchery We ate that nite at Red Robin, good food and good service! Monday ended up being a light day, as will the next two most likely since I actually have to do some work this trip

Got some “sleep,” did some laundry and packed up so I could check out the corporate apartment and into the hotel. I did this because I hate being too far away from where I have to conduct classes, no need to add stress where it’s not needed

But I’m getting ahead of myself, before all that I’d decided to head over to Planet Hollywood to check out the filming of CSI. Photoc had passed along that they’d be filming and they might need extras, you just needed to show up by 8am The alarm went off, I hit snooze….the alarm went off, I hit snooze….the alarm went off, I hit the snooze, you get the idea! I finally drug my arse outta bed, got cleaned up, and headed on down to check out the potential action. I figured a few people would show up just to watch what was going on and a few more would be there hoping to be an extra. [[ This is a content summary only.
Day 3, 9/23:

Sunday was pretty light with the whip cream on the Irish coffee being the AVP Tourney at TI

I ended up finally getting some decent sleep before venturing out for various items I needed for the work week. Remind me to NEVER step foot again in ANY wal-mart EVER AGAIN....'nuff said

Next was lunch and back to Pop's I went for yet another philly steak...very nice people and another good opportunity for people watching. The weather is absolutely fantastic!

I just basically killed time before heading down to TI for the tourney. I got there around 6 or so, registered, then headed over to Canters Deli for a quick bite. What a buzz killer that was....nice enough service but SLOW AS HELL

I headed back to TI to meet some fellow AVPers and photos, not too sure I wanna see how they turned out, but what the hell, it was a good time. It seemed our table was having more fun than the other 2, as evidenced by getting a round of yager (?sp) bombs during level 1... [[ This is a content summary only. I Sure Got My Moneys Worth, One Bad-Beat Deserves Another, That was a $6,000 Dollar Hand, FARK YOU, How Could You Make That Play?, I Played the Best Poker of My Life and all I got was a $10 Comp?!, and the list goes on and on and on….

L1-3, 25/50, 50/100, 100/200:

It didn’t take long to get a fix on the players at the table and I was determined to play the best I could! I’d already noted the player in this hand as someone who was going to be a thorn in my side, and since he had position on me, my accumulating job wasn’t going to be easy! I open-raise to T125 from late position with pocket 7s. Villain min-raised from the bb and I called. The board was rainbow rags and he leads out for T600. I min-raise him back and take it down. During the next orbit, against the same opponent I call his early position raise from the bb with pocket 6s. [[ This is a content summary only.
Day 2, 9/22:

Saturday started out like any other day....any other day that smacks you upside the head at the CRACK OF DAWN! I'm on a typical vegas-poker diet. You know the one where you play so much and go past "normal meal" times then end up not eating at all. Since I don't like eating late at nite, I'd skipped a meal on Friday which ended up leading to a pounding headache promptly at 6:30am Saturday morning. Resolved not to get any more sleep, I dashed out to one of my favorite breakfast places, Blueberry Hill. These things are all over town, nothing really special about 'em 'cept good food at good prices. For what would end up being the 1st of two times I was "mistaken" for a local. I guess not many tourists make it out to North Decatur at 7am for grub Snag a counter seat and people watch, you won't be disappointed! After some biscuits&gravy, it's back to home base to get ready for the day. By 10am, I was on my way to TI so say hello to the gang in the 9am mixed-game. [[ This is a content summary only. ***Warning*** Poker stupidity contained herein, continue at your own risk!

There's a reason why Dave's winning these things like he is and above all else, it's aggression and skill....however, couple that with an abundance of overplaying Ax, I've watched poker on tv players and you have a recipe for making $$$. Sadly enough, I DO NOT have the skills Dave posses, just see my sig Tired as I was though, I did observe well but my mind just wasn't where it needed to be to take full advantage. I'd flown into town sporting an '07 WSOP tee and didn't realize the image it'd create. Even so, 1-2 players and I exchanged knowing glances regarding the general play at the table. Tshirt aside, the better players pegged me right off the bat, I need to work on acting fishier

During the 10 hands dealt at 25/50 (no knock on the dealers, it's just a simple by-product of 20min rounds) I play my 1st hand. EP player bets to 300 and when I find AKo it's time to raise. Decided to cab it to the airport due to the length of the trip and of course I had to leave at the height of rush hour! So I wait, and wait and wait some more, almost to the point of giving up and driving the truck. While waiting, I'm pacing the driveway and as I watch some ducks take off from the pond and fly overhead, I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Low and behold, it's a portent of things to quickly come. White bombs drop with the ferocity of YappyDaves' raises and I'm off to find a new shirt and a splash of smell-good juice! Cab finally shows and we're off on an uneventful trip.

After a score at Starbucks, I make my way to the news stand to peruse some light reading fare for the plane. Small isles make it cramped so I don't really take notice of a older gentleman breaking off from his wife, scanning the same books I am. No time at all passes before he rejoins her and I soon learn why. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Pre-7/1, tournaments around town routinely drew fields of 100 or more, at several different rooms. This was at the truly horrid 30% vig with 20 and sometimes, even 15 minute levels.

Post-7/1 with better blinds, longer levels and bigger buy-ins was sure to draw the same crowds, no? Apparently the draw of the also new, $100NL games have all but quashed the MTT numbers. The single table tournaments also seem to be drawing larger numbers.

Tampa Greyhound Track is a new room with plenty of fencing and guards. But they have the BEST weekly tournament structure in town, HANDS DOWN! And yet they can't even get the game off the ground. Hasn't run once due to not enough people showing up. 30 min levels and 5000 chips for $225. I'd LOVE to see this game get going!!! 1/2NL is pot raked.

It was a pretty fun evening with most of the crew cutting up and playing hard against each other, really made it enjoyable, even for a over-the-hill player like myself. Others didn't take it so well, but damn them! It was another up and down nite as I played a game I'm not accustomed to but look to get better at playing.
Last but not least, with work looming, I had to get setup for a week of training. After completing the business side of the trip, I decided to ditch my original plans of playing the Commerce on Monday and opted for The Hustler after talking with fellow 2+2r Scooterdoo (lakong here on tworags ). I was much more impressed with this facility, more along the lines of what I'd expected! It was a $125 with a single $100 rebuy which I took right away, and must've been the only one out of the 129 registed as I got some seriously odd looks! Most simply rebought when they got low or busted....VERY odd!

T3k in chips and starting at 25/25 with 25 minute levels. Auto shufflers and decent dealers kept the game moving but it seemed like I was the only one who didn't know anyone in the room as it was a 129 person home game! I chipped up with AA in the sb, just completing, praying the bb had a hand. He pushed, I called, my hand held. [[ This is a content summary only. I decided to head down 15S to check out the room availability in Jean and Primm, barring getting a room, I'd drive back. Thankfully I scored a cheap room in Jean, about 30 minutes south of the strip and after a decent sleep, I was headed to Caesars for the noon tourney, then the long drive back.

$130 total and I got settled in for a hopeful session of good cards, but that was quickly quashed as we found ourselves seated with a OBNOXIOUS drunk know-it-all. I was laughing it up, having a good time and making table friends as usual which this guy HATED. I got called a mother farker and was told my chip protector was farking gay.
After my Hawaiin Gardens experience, I ditched the weekend plan, mapped out the route to Vegas and early Saturday morning, I was on my way to the Venetian! I "landed" at TI right around 10:30am, making the drive in about 3 1/2 hours. I got registered then wandered off for some wake-up juice and eats. I've said it before and I'll say it again, man do I LOVE this room and I LOVE this tourney!

Cards in the air at noon and when all was said and done, there were 81 total entrants. It was a true rollercoaster ride as I went into the 1st break at around the starting stack of T10k, not great by any stretch of the imagination but not bad either considering the structure. I was able to chip up twice catching QQ and AA in the bb against an agressive lp player, but both times I was short and all it did was get back in the chip hunt. Bad for me but good for Binion's, I busted early enough to head downtown for the 8pm tourney. [[ This is a content summary only.
Hawaiian Gardens Friday $155 tournament

I had business in Orange County the week of 4/17 and as any good poker player would do, I flew out the Friday before the week of work! I had tournaments all planned out for the LA and surrounding area but that all changed when I got a taste of Hawaiian Gardens and an itch to play at the Venetian!

I played in the $155 at HG on Friday, with starting chips of T2k and 25 minute levels, it wasn't much better than what I experience in FL. I was totally let down by the facilities. I wasn't expecting a Vegas style card room but I wasn't prepared for the "warehouse" type setting and exposed ceiling. A VERY odd feeling for sure! I ended up busting with a hand I'll vow never to play again, the dreaded AQ! I raised from early position and got heads-up to the flop with position. Villain led out for 200 and I raised to 600 which was flat-called on a Qx7 board. Turn provided me with a 3rd queen but all was for naught as it filled him up and I was prompty heading for the door.
Sahara 7pm $62 Tournament Trip Report

Onward to Friday nite to play in the 7pm Sarhara tourney for $62. Parked at Caesars, my base of operations for the week but before I'm off I just HAVE to do a little shooping. For the sheer novelty of it all, I have to get a Pete Rose signed baseball with the inscription, "I'm sorry I bet on baseball." Phoned a colleague of mine earlier that day and he's a HUGE fan, so it was two balls! Also picked up a couple of Opus X sticks, a little strong for my taste but a nice cigar. Round it all off with a nifty Michael Goddard ornament and I was off to pack my swag away!

Now it was time for the bullet (monrail) right to the Sahara! Definitely an "old school" room compared to what I've seen so far. Tournament had just over 150 runners and I'm glad there wasn't any hay available, otherwise I don't know where they wouldn've stuck all the additional donkeys! [[ This is a content summary only.
I finished class a little past 12:30 and stuck around the corporate office till 2 pm wrapping things up and saying goodbye to my Vegas crew. I'd decided that I wanted to check out the Goddard Gallery at the Aladdin so off I went. For some strange reason, I missed the turn at Trop and Eastern and flew right past Flamingo, which landed me in strange territory. But no worries, you can see the strip from everywhere right.... I ended up on Twain, then Industrial and by the time I made it back to the strip, I realized how much time I'd lost.

Not wanting to play cards in "work garb" I made the obscene decision to head back to Sunset Station for a jeans/ballcap change, then head back out. Well, by the time I actually got back to the strip and parked, it was already 5pm...

I found the parking garage with little trouble and the walk to the poker room was a much better than the MGM marathon trek! [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Wednesday nite and after being in town for 48 hours, I've finally held cards in me wee hands

I knew I'd finish my "all day" class early and since I only have 1 class to conduct on Thursday, it was prime time to hit the tables. After being on my feet, literally ALL DAY, the last thing I wanted to do was walk, so allow me a small suggestion, PLAN YOUR PARKING! The drive from Sunset Station isn't bad at all, and I used Trop and Koval but the parking garage was sheer chaos. After finally finding a spot, the walk thru the garage to the entrance and all the way to the back of the joint was just plain silly!

I didn't know if I needed a players card or not, so I decided to stop off and get one before heading back to the room, got a "nice" key chain for my troubles but not needed for play in the room, cest la vie...I left the Station around 4:30, leaving myself ample time, unfortuantely, too ample. I was registered and wandering aimlessly just after 5pm. [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Venetian Deepstack Recap

I really don't know what I can add about this room that hasn't already been said 8) . It's very well run, thanks Anthony! The dealers are extremely competent and know how to move a game along. The tables and chairs are great. Cocktail service is above board, being able to order GOOD water and top-shelf liquors; and what I really like is that the servers ask each player individually what they want, nice! Oh, and let's not forget the carving station, scrumptious! Plush waiting area with plenty of reading material.

After sleeping in late, I headed down to the strip, parking at TI and making the easy walkway trudge over to the Venetian. I bought in direct and headed upstairs to the little Italian coffee/pastry shop for a quick pick-me-up prior to the commencement of cards. After polishing off "breakfast" I made my way back down to the room and settled in for some deep-stack poker. It's T10,000 for a total of $550, they take the $10 add-on as you buy-in.
