You Young Guns Need To Check Your Egos
|
|
|
|
|
|
| Check Your Ego At The Door |
|
|
I feel the need to write this blog for a few reasons... 1) I think the majority of players that write on this forum are young guys ranging from 21 to 35 .. Yes,, I am an old guy,,darn near 45 years old,, and most of you guys cut your teeth online.. I ,on the other hand was a casino regular much before the on line explosion ..
2) I think sometimes ( just my opinion ,,, some of you guys need to check your egos at the door,,when it comes to your poker wisdom..
As someone who has been through a few valleys to go with the peaks in my poker journey ,,,, I think it is real important to realize that a month ,, six months ,,or even sometimes even a year,, still may not be enough time to determine if you are truly a winning player.. Now of course I realize you young guys are playing a gazillion more hands online than us live dinosaurs ,,but you get the point... All of a sudden a guy wins a big internet tourney and makes a big score,, and he self proclaims himself a poker pro..

| 3 Month Cash Game Overview |
|
|
After this weeks horrific start I strung together 4 moderate winning days which somewhat lessened the damage.
Wednesday + 1 ½ buy ins
Thursday + 1 buy in
Friday + 1 buy in
Saturday + ¾ buy in
I spent very little time playing this week but am pleased I was able to get back on track in such a limited amount of hands. While cash games aren’t a major part of my long term poker goals, I would still prefer being more successful at them than I presently am.
One major “leak” over my first 3 months at the 6-max tables is easily identifiable. This isn’t a leak in how I play a certain hand but rather an overview of my results after what I consider a fairly reasonable time frame. After looking at my daily results I see that my biggest winning day has been for ~ 4 buy ins. I already have 4 losing days that equal or exceed that with my worst coming a week ago of ~ 10 buy ins.
From August thru October I played a total of 77 days.

| Some Thoughts For Us Lower Volume Players |
|
|
Still no tourneys for me this week though I’ve been reading and thinking plenty about them. I've been continuing to play cash on a daily basis. I've continued to build on what was already a solid week. Last I left off I was ahead slightly more than 3 buy ins for the week.
Thursday + 1 buy in
Friday + 1/3 buy in
With Thursday and Friday in the books I'm ahead 4 ½ buy ins heading into today, the final day of the week.
I’ve been very happy with my game lately. I feel I’m concentrating better and making proper decisions more often than I’m not which is all that I can ask of myself.
The reality for those of us who don’t put in major volume each week is that our short term results are more highly influenced by the fate of the cards as we don’t have the benefit of speeding up the big ‘V’ (variance). This may be one of the most important things for me to keep up front as a poker player.

| A Different Kind of Sick Day |
|
|
Still feeling sick which sucks but it's not enough to keep me in bed just enough were I feel like crap all day. Not sure if it's been good for me to play since I have that slow groggy feeling where it seems like your brain is thinking in slow motion. Hopefully this will disappear soon.
Yesterday was another ridiculous day and about 2/3s of the way through it I thought it was gonna be the mirror opposite of Tuesday. I started out 8 tabling again and was doing pretty decent to start. Then things went bad and one player in particular put me on tilt. He was stacking off with any draw, any pair, and playing 75% of his hands. But somehow he kept hitting monsters on me and stacking me and then dumping my chips to the rest of the players. So about 2.5 hours into my session I was down $1200. I knew I wasn't playing my best before but I took a deep breath and decided to try and get back to my usual game and just grind back. So after 4 hours of total play I was back up $50 on the day. After a day like Tuesday where you just kill the tables this may be the second best feeling you can have, digging yourself out of a hole to get to even.
I played another 3 tabling session while playing the 33r PCA satellite again later in the night. Went about the same as yesterday. I cashed the PCA satellite but didn't win so I basically got my money back (a little less this time since I had to double rebuy during the rebuy period). Also was up another $150 at the cash games for a total of +$200 on the day. My high point was +$600 but I played a few hands poorly toward the end of my session.
Stars is also starting to run some 'step' sngs to the PCA that I will probably play a few of. For those who weren't around in the Party Poker days here's a link to what a step sng is. PCA Steps
Not sure what the plan is for today. I really need to go get some grocery shopping done but I don't feel like leaving the house. Also, the cable still isn't working so I need to call the cable company again and get on their ass. So unless something crazy happens tonight I probably won't have another blog up for a few days.
Here are the hands against the maniac yesterday:
This is the hand that started me on tilt. It looks really bad without reads but he's stacking off with probably any 8, and straight draw and probably any 6 or flush draw combo on the turn.

Hand number 2:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577731
Third overpair in a row against this guy and I have to hit a two outer to beat him:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577737
I'm not sure what the odds of those three hands happening is but while they weren't one immediately after the other I didn't get any other big pairs in between them. So for him to flop trips twice and hit his set (boat) the other time has to be ridiculous.
Now it's time to "FINISH HIM" though:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577748
Oh no wait, he picks up another monster against me... ok try again:
http://www.pokerhand.org/?1577757
Like I said he was doing that the whole time even with a full stack. So I got a little redemption at the end which helped me to get off tilt and make the little comeback on the day.

| Sick Day on a Sick Day |
|
|
Came down with a cold the last day before leaving Aruba so I've had a headache and been congested the past few days. Despite not feeling the best I had an awesome day playing $1/2nl 6max cash games yesterday. Started off with a 1.5 hour 8 tabling session which can be rather draining as playing that many tables requires a lot of focus. I finished up about $600 and then took a little break to eat and put a new load of laundry in from my Aruba trip.
I was gonna catch up on my DVR after that but realized that my cable box was broken so I figured I might as well just put another little session in. Wasn't in the mood to 8 table again so I dropped down to 6 tables and surfed around the internet while playing. Playing 6 tables still requires a decent amount of my attention but I usually never feel rushed playing 6 tables like I occasionally do at 8. I played for about another 1.5 hours and brought my daily total up to about $1500.

| Coming Back!! |
|
|
Well, things are definitely running better here at the end of the month. I recouped my online losses and am now in the positive for online play. In fact, I've recovered everything except 4 buyins of the Live $200NL losses that I took at the first of this month. I made it back into the black on Tuesday, but I had a session that put me into the clear on Thursday night. I only played an hour or so, but was able to pick up a little more than 2.5 buyins at $100NL. Here are the main 2 winning hands from last night, one is an auto call, the other is very close. In fact, I was so unsure of the quality of my decision w/ the Qs, that I posted it on 2+2 for review. The consensus was to call and let the variance sort it out.

| Reversal of Fortunes |
|
|
Well, I wish that I had an awesome trip report to come back with, but unfortunately, ole lady Luck has reversed her favor on me. After posting my best month ever last month, I've proceeded to drop 8 buyins between Live $200NL and online $25 to $100NL. This has erased 2/3's of my win from last month, but I'm playing it safe and hanging in there.
One thing that I'm doing while running bad is playing less and studying more. I believe that desire has a lot to do with our win rate, "If I want to, I will. If I don't care, I won't!" It's that simple. By playing less, I'm letting my desire grow and keeping my money off the table when things just aren't going my way. I wish that I would have played a little less in Biloxi though so that I could have saved some more of last month's win.
Good friends are necessary when you are running bad, especially when it's a big fall after you're been running golden. BJJIII
